The opening chapter introduces the first-person-plural voice of the murdered teenagers: “We have always lived here, though we pretend we’ve just arrived. This event and its unsettling, open-ended aftermath provide the inspiration for Scott Blackwood’s second novel and third work of fiction, “See How Small.” The novel subtracts one victim from the tragedy - describing three deaths instead of four - but largely adheres to the known details of what followed. To this day, after a string of arrests, dismissed charges and more than 50 confessions, the case remains unsolved. The fire, and the high-pressure water used by firefighters, destroyed much of the evidence. 6, 1991, a yogurt shop located where the nail salon now stands was set ablaze after those four teenagers were raped and shot there. In a bed of white granite rocks shaded by an oak, a bronze plaque commemorates the lives of four young women - Amy Ayers, Eliza Thomas, and Sarah and Jennifer Harbison. Near one end, Classy Nails Spa is wedged between a hair salon and a furniture showroom. The usual suspects - Jimmy John’s, a pet grooming shop - line the row of one-story facades.
At first glance, nothing about it is remarkable. On the busy corner of Rockwood and West Anderson Lanes in north Austin, Tex., stands a beige-bricked strip mall.
